Choosing the Best Crib Newborn

The Westport Cot Bed is a minimalist crib that can look stunning in a Scandi-design nursery. It also offers a great variety of versatility, with three mattress support levels and the capability to convert into the bed of a toddler.

Cribs take up a lot of space, so bassinets could be a better option if your house is small. However, a lot of parents prefer a crib due to security reasons.

Safety

The health and wellbeing of your baby's infant is dependent on the crib you select. You want to make sure that it meets current safety standards and is free of dangers that could cause harm during sleep. It should be sturdy and well-constructed, with no loose parts that could get caught on clothing or present dangers of choking. It is crucial to follow the instructions of the manufacturer to set up and use the crib and to regularly inspect the crib.

Check the distance between the slats. It should not be more than 2 and 3/8 inches apart to prevent your baby's head or legs from being trapped between them. You should be capable of seeing and reaching your child in the crib. If you aren't see, the slats need to be wider and not as close together.

Another aspect of the crib to be considered is the mattress support system. It should be adjustable so that you can lower the crib mattress as your child grows. This will decrease the risk of your baby leaving the crib which is a frequent occurrence as they learn to crawl.

Other safety features to look for include a fitted sheet that fits the mattress with ease, and an enduring and solid construction. Choose a crib with fixed sides instead of one with drop sides. Drop sides can be hazardous for your child. It is also recommended to sleep in the same room as your baby for six months or so, and then move them into their own bedroom when they are old enough to be monitored while sleeping alone.

Not least, ensure that the crib is kept away from radiators and windows, and that dangling items like blind cords or curtains are not in reach.  small cot beds  should also remove any items that could pose danger of choking such as blankets or pillows. You should also be wary of purchasing second-hand cribs because they may not meet current safety standards or have been recalled due to other reasons.

Design

While cribs may look all the same, it is crucial to remember that every crib must comply with strict safety guidelines. Most of the cribs that we looked at were designed in a similar way to ensure structural stability. For instance, many have circular bars that don't have any gaps or rough areas that could catch or pinch babies. We also tested each crib and rated it for its ease of use and assembly. We suggest choosing the crib with less parts to avoid confusion.

One of our favorites is the Evolur Sprout Crib, which is designed with an elegant, contemporary design and comes in several colors, including two-toned. It also comes with an all-purpose mattress fitting and is Greenguard Gold Certified for having low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Stork Craft Equinox 3 in 1 is a different alternative. This crib is sleek and modern, with minimal details, making it ideal for modern nurseries. The crib comes in different designs and four mattress sizes so that your baby can use it as a newborn or toddler. The crib was solid and stable. It did not flex or creak when a large child was seated.

Convertible cribs are a great option if you plan to have more children. Many of these options can be converted into a toddler bed, and then a full-size bed, offering excellent longevity for the money you spend. Our test parents gave the Sweet2Sleep Crib high marks as an example of a convertible bed. The side rails that slide down were loved by a lot of parents for making feeding at night more secure and less stressful. They also said that the crib had enough room for the baby to rest comfortably while mom and dad lay down.

If you're looking for a classic style DaVinci's Carter's Colby 4-in-1 crib is a good choice. This crib is more affordable than the Stork Craft and has a timeless design that can be incorporated into the majority of nursery decors. It has three different mattress heights, however it could be a bit too small for toddlers and petite parents.

Mattress

Newborns can be messy, and a washable crib mattress is essential. Diaper leaks and baby spit-up can cause mattresses to become dirty and damp and result in mildew or bacterial growth that could be harmful to infants. Choose a mattress that can be washed with cloths or cleaned with mild cleaner, and select a mattress cover that is waterproof to prevent liquids from getting into the mattress and causing health issues.

Look for mattresses that are rated to last 10 years, so it will be ready for toddlers and beyond. Many of the mattresses we've discussed here are reversible with infant and toddler side. This allows you to use them from the time of birth until your child is old enough to be their own bed size.

A mattress that is firm is ideal for infants, because it will provide the greatest support for their developing spines. A super-firm sleeping surface can also reduce the risk of SIDS. This is because an extremely soft mattress increases the chance that a baby's head will sink into it.

Check the label on the mattress to make sure it complies with Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. The CPSC requires that mattresses be tested for the possibility of flammability, waterproofing lead, as well as other chemicals that could pose risk to infants. There are also certifications like Greenguard CertiPUR, GOTS and CertiPURUS which are a great indication that the mattress has been tested for the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can damage infants their nervous and respiratory systems.

The weight of the crib mattress is another factor to take into consideration. Sheet changes at night require that you move and lift the mattress. If you are unable to lift heavy objects or don't want carry a heavy item, consider choosing a mattress that is lighter for your crib. Newton Wovenaire, for example weighs only 8 pounds, while Naturepedic Organic Crib Mattress – Dual Firmness weighs 20 lbs. This makes it one of the heavier mattresses in this review. It is also made from foam, not woven-core inners. This makes it much easier to move around compared to a traditional coil mattress.

Assembly

New parents will be happy with a crib that's easy to put together. You should choose an item that is securely secured and with no sharp edges or rough patches that could irritate the skin of your baby. Avoid cribs with drop-sides and headboard/footboard cuts. These items aren't in compliance with the safety standards of today.

When you're searching for a crib, bear in mind that you'll likely require a separate toddler bed conversion kit (if you decide to purchase a convertible crib). The majority of manufacturers sell these kits separately. They're typically affordable, and will assist your child in transitioning to a bigger bed more seamlessly.

Many new parents appreciate the longevity that can be found in a convertible crib and they're a great investment for families with multiple children. They are designed to last and generally can be transformed into an infant bed, daybed or a full-size bed.

The Oeuf Modern Crib, which was a runner-up during our tests, is constructed from sustainable New Zealand pine. It has won several awards from various parenting magazines like BabyCenter and Babble. It has a medium-height profile that can be transformed from an infant crib into a toddler bed with rail or a daybed that doesn't have rail. It's simple to put together and has plenty of aesthetic appeal, but the slender finish is susceptible to scratches during normal use.
